Do You Do Anything by Halves?

Bowl of whole grain cereal
You need to make at least half your grains whole, but what’s a whole grain?

It’s the entire grain kernel. Some examples of whole grain foods are whole wheat bread, brown rice, oatmeal, whole wheat flake cereal, bulgur, whole (not pearled) barley and popcorn.

How do you eat more whole grains?

Whole wheat bread
Substitute a whole-grain product for a refined product – such as eating whole-wheat bread instead of white bread or brown rice instead of white rice. It’s important to substitute the whole-grain product for the refined one, rather than adding the whole-grain product.
Woman cooking
For a change, try brown rice or whole-wheat pasta. Try brown rice stuffing in baked green peppers or tomatoes and whole-wheat macaroni in macaroni and cheese.

Bowl of popcorn
Don’t forget popcorn is a whole grain, and can be a smart choice if made with little or no added salt and butter.

A healthier lifestyle is easier than you might think. This is one in a series of monthly webpage features to show you how to take advantage of the great information put together by your USDA colleagues.
