Richard I. Millar Papers: American Poultry Historical Society

Introduction

This extensive collection of poultry material was used by Richard I. Millar during his teaching and research career. Millar worked in the Animal/Veterinary Science Department at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island. Materials included are scientific reprints; academic, government and commercial bulletins and pamphlets; and clippings from trade journals, newspapers, and commercial brochures on all types of products which were available over a span of 40-50 years.

Poultry management practices and equipment used from 1934 to 1979 and economic factors affecting the industry during this period are covered. Problems and benefits stemming from poultry manure during this period are also addressed. Studies on feed, trace minerals and water, as needed by poultry, are reported. Material of a general and specific nature concerning eggs, from care in handling, marketing, Products Inspection Act, Marketing Orders, and other laws and regulations covering them, can be found in this collection. Material on other avian species is also included.

A significant portion of the collection deals with diseases and parasites encountered in the poultry industry. In addition to individual diseases, general recommendations on cleaning and disinfecting, vaccination programs and the use of medication and antibiotics are also covered (1952-90).
